About GIPI

Brief History of the Institution.

Gateway Industrial & Petro–Gas Institute (GIPI) was established by Ogun State Government in November 2007. The Institute was commissioned January 25, 2008 while the technical skills development programme took off on the 25th May 2008. GIPI which is the second specialized skills acquisition and training institute after the Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun for the Oil and Gas Industries in Nigeria is presently located at Oni near Iwopin, Ogun Waterside, Ogun State. Oni, Ogun Waterside LGA of Ogun State, is close to the Oni Beach; about 10km from Iwopin, the coastal paper mill town and a few nautical miles from Lagos provides a serene atmosphere, conducive to learning and pleasure in a safe environment for staff, trainees and visitors.

The Institute was envisioned by the State government to provide efficient and effective training to young people yearning to partake in and contribute to the development of the hydrocarbon and other industries, at the middle level cadre. Hence, the Institute mounted programmes in the areas of technical competency to show its commitment to the local content initiatives of the Federal Government of Nigeria regarding capacity building.

Gateway Industrial & Petro-Gas Institute (GIPI) thus commenced running of courses in the school of technical skills development which is tailored towards the certification of its trainees in the various skills, in conjunction with Professional certifying bodies, such as Nigerian Institute of Welding (NIW) which is a member of International Authorization Board and International Institute of Welding (IIW). Others are Nigerian Institute of Safety Professional (NISP), NIgerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), NABTEB, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). In 2013, GIPI was accredited to run National Diploma (Innovation) in Welding & Fabrication.

The Institute is presently running the following courses:

  • Welding and Fabrication Technology
  • Occupational Health Safety
  • Plumbing and Pipe-fitting Technology
  • Marine Engineering Assistant
  • Quartermaster, Power Driven Small Crafts

  • Underwater Diving among others
The School of Technical Skills Development is still expanding to accommodate new courses which will be of relevance in the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Process and Manufacturing Organization. Some of such courses lead to professional certificate in Pipeline design, Piping design, Electrical & Mechanical Equipment maintenance, Instrumentation and Controls, Fitting & Machining, Mechanical / Plant Design, Inland Waters Navigation (Basic) and Inland Waters Navigation (Final).

These programmes are designed for trainees, who upon graduation are ready to fit into the industrial setting thus drastically reducing the training budgets of the various industries that engage their services. The budging entrepreneurship in them is encouraged during their training to make them employers of labour too.
